Advice after a fire

Important precautions:

  • Don’t get into the damaged place; make certain with the Firefighters Department that your house is safe. Don’t cut nor get through colour security strips placed on windows or doors to warn about damaged areas, unless the authorities allow you to do it without danger. Remember that fires can rekindle in a moment from unseen smouldering sites.

  • Generally, the Fire Department will make sure before leaving the place, that all the services (water, electricity and natural gas) can be used without danger or that they are disconnected. Don’t try to make them work by yourself.

  • Be careful about structural damage caused by fire. Floors and roofs may have been weakened and liable to collapse.

  • You mustn’t take food, drinks or medicines that have been exposed to heat, smoke, soot and water.

  • Don’t try to repair valuables; you could do more harm than good. Only specialists can vouch for optimum restoration.

    How to proceed:

    • Informing immediately to the insurance company about the disaster or to the local agent or broker.

    • Protecting your property against further damage by doing reasonable or necessary repairing such as covering holes in the roof or in the walls.

    • Taking reasonable precautions againsts disasters, such as draining the pipes in winter if the house will not use heating for some time. The insurance company can refuse to pay for the disasters that might have occurred by a lack of reasonable care.

    • Making a detailed inventory of the quantity, the description, the original purchase price, the date of purchase, the assessed damage and the cost of reparation of the spoiled personal belongings. Have in mind to take photographs or to videorecord the place of the damage so that you will be able to provide insurance adjusters with additional information to your claim.

    • Cooperating with the broker or adjuster being ready to show the damaged property to the insurance official.

    • Keeping copies in you file of every document and photo you give to the loss adjuster or to the insurance company.
